Peak shaving

Reduce peak load costs by deliberately shaving the highest peak loads.

Grid fees (Netzentgelte) include a demand charge (Leistungspreis) that follows the highest peak load in the billing period. The battery shaves these peaks by discharging at high load and covering part of it, and so reduces the demand charge.

Peak shaving: the battery charges at night and covers both peak loads, so the grid load stays below the peak load with battery

Example: peak load reduced from 500 kW to 300 kW, at a demand charge of €150/kW that is €30,000 of savings per year.

Furo calculates the net present value (NPV) over the project term for this: the investment against the sum of the annual savings, minus charging costs and forgone feed-in revenue.

Can be combined with further strategies, see Combined applications.
